Best Chinese Green Tea

Organic Dragon Well , a classic Chinese Green tea distinguished by its color , shape and taste- 4 OZ Bag

Organic Dragon Well from GreenHillTea

China is one of the countries that introduced the world to green tea. It has the longest history of tea brewing and drinking, and the oldest written records concerning tea. No wonder, Chinese green tea is valued so much all over the world.

Today, we have a lot of types of green tea coming from China. Longjing, or Dragon Well tea is ranked quite highly among all the types. It is a special variety with its outstanding features that make it different from any other kind.

Dragon Well has a special processing technology. It is pan roasted right after picking before the natural oxidation process even starts. As a result, we have tea with minimal oxidation that has a light yellow-green color and a mild flavor.

Thanks to such a technology of preparation, Dragon Well tea is especially rich in all the active components green tea is known for. It has the highest concentration of catechins among all the green teas. It also contains amino acids and vitamin С in high amounts.

Because it is roasted, not steamed, Dragon Well has a peculiar toasted flavor that will linger on your palate for quite some time. It is rather mellow and sweet, yet has a noticeable bitterness to it. A few sips of this tea are enough if you want to freshen up. You will be thrilled by the fresh scent of this Chinese green tea.

When you first brew a cup of this green tea from GreenHillTea, it will surprise you with its peculiar green tint. Most green teas have a yellowish color, yet Longjing is distinguished, among other things, for its color.

Best American Green Tea

Organic Hawaii Premium Green Tea from Arbor Teas

We have chosen this tea for true patriots. We are used to all those Chinese and Japanese teas. Yet, very few know that excellent green tea is cultivated in the United States. Surprised? No wonder. This tea is very rare and exceptional.

Yet, that is true – green tea is grown in the US, more specifically, in Hawaii. It is cultivated in the mountainous region on the Pacific Coast, on the Mauna Kea Tea Farm. The farmers use a natural approach and use no chemical fertilizer so you can be sure of the highest quality of the product.

The green tea grown in Hawaii has all the qualities you can think of when thinking of excellent green tea. It has a buttery flavor with sweet notes characteristic only of premium teas. Each cup will keep you refreshed and energized for long. At the same time, it will produce a slight drying effect in your mouth and throat, so appreciated by true gourmets.

This tea has an interesting peculiarity. You may notice no bitterness if you drink it hot; yet, as your tea cools down, you will notice that you start feeling some astringency. The tea leaves grown in Hawaii have a specific color when dried – a slightly bluish tint. When steeped, though, they will give you a drink of a traditional greenish yellow color.

All the abovementioned characteristics make this green tea from Arbor Teas a perfect gift for those who are used to having only the best. Its price also reflects all its extraordinary features, so that only few connoisseurs will be ready to purchase this little package of pure joy enclosed in tea leaves.

Gren Tea by Product Form

Best Loose Leaf Green Tea

Organic Pinhead Gunpowder Green Tea from Positively Tea

Let’s face it. No matter how popular tea bags are, loose leaf tea is better. With tea bags, you can never be sure of the quality of the contents. Actually, most tea bags contain a very small amount of tea leaves. There are much more twigs and dust in them, which, of course, affects the taste, aroma, and the benefits you get from your drink. And, if there are leaves, they are not full ones but parts of broken leaves.

Tea leaves should be not broken, otherwise they lose most of their essential oils. As a result, tea brewed from such leaves smells and tastes much worse than tea prepared by steeping full tea leaves. Bottom line is – if you want to get the best from drinking your tea, choose loose leaf tea.
Organic Positively Tea Company, Pinhead Gunpowder, Green Tea, Loose Leaf, 16 Ounce

There are lots of teas from different brands available today. We suggest that you try this gunpowder green tea from Positively Tea. It is 100% organic product grown and packed according to the highest standards. It contains no GMO and it has been grown without any chemicals, meaning it is also pesticide-free. The get the most out of the taste and benefits of this wonderful green tea, let it soak in hot (but not boiling) water for three to four minutes.

Like all loose leaf teas from Positively Tea, this green tea comes in a paper bag with aluminum insides to keep the tea fresh. Such packaging technology allows the tea leaves to retain their taste, smell, and other qualities for a long time.

Best Green Tea Bags

Stash Tea Premium Green Tea, Box of 100 Tea Bags

Premium Green Tea from Stash Tea

Tea bags have won great popularity recently. All leading brands offer lots of different varieties of tea in tea bags. In fact, tea bags are in a much easier access than loose leaf tea. And the choice of flavors is much wider compared to loose tea leaves.

Although loose leaf tea is always preferable, tea bags also have their advantages. They are much more convenient in use. You can take them with you and enjoy a cup of tea virtually anywhere. We do not always have the opportunity to brew tea properly, with a teapot and everything necessary. Tea bags are far less demanding from that point of view. Everything you need to make yourself a brew are a cup and some hot water. Each tea bag contains just the perfect amount of tea for one cup.

Loose leaf tea is more likely to be a high-quality product. However, there are also tea bags that contain the finest tea leaves from responsible sources. Tea in bags from Stash Tea is among them.

This tea is grown in Brazil, in specially created tea gardens. The region has perfectly humid climate and very rich soil, giving the tea all the qualities we value so much. Then, it is imported to the US, where it is blended and packaged. Choosing this product, you will get 100 bags with fine quality green tea.

Each tea bag contains dried tea leaves of excellent taste and smell, allowing you to enjoy and appreciate each cup. This is pure green tea, with no artificial flavors, colors, or other additives.

This is Sencha green tea, meaning it has a greenish yellow color and a traditional taste – an herbal flavor with delicate nutty notes. Dry leaves have a rich and deep green color. With this tea bags, you can enjoy each cup knowing that it contains only natural ingredients.

Best Bottled Green Tea

Honey Green from Honest Tea

Bottled green tea is, perhaps, the most convenient variety. You do not need to waste time waiting for the water to boil, then for the tea to infuse the water with taste and active components. You do not even have to wait for the tea to cool down a bit so that you can drink it without scalding your mouth.

Of course, such convenience comes at a certain cost. You get your tea packaged in plastic, which is not the best option neither from the point of view of ecology nor health. Bottled tea will never have such a taste and smell as freshly brewed hot tea.
Honest Tea Organic Fair Trade Honey Green Gluten Free, 16.9 Fl. Oz, 12 Pack

If you choose bottled tea, you can enjoy it only cold. If you decide to heat it up, you’ll get even less active components than there already are in that plastic bottle. So, bottled tea is good for those who prefer their tea cold. You can pour your tea into the glass, add some ice, and enjoy a refreshing drink.

If you want to be sure that your bottle of tea contains no preserving agents or other harmful chemicals, choose bottled tea only from those brands who are known for their high-quality products. Honest Tea is one of such brands.

Choosing this package, you will get twelve 16.9 fl oz bottles of real brewed green tea made of organic tea leaves. This is a sweetened drink that contains cane sugar and a bit of honey. The sweeteners added are just enough to let you enjoy the slight sweetness of the drink without turning it into a calorie bomb. One bottle contains 70 calories.

This bottled tea is no-GMO certified, which makes it safe to drink. It also contains only organic components; great for those who care about their health. Apart from tea leaves, water, cane sugar, and honey, each bottle contains a natural flavor, ascorbic acid, and citric acid. Be mindful drinking this tea, as each bottle contains 94 mg caffeine, which is rather a lot.

Yogi Green Tea

Let’s be honest – yoga has become somewhat of a fashion recently. More and more yoga centers spring up around the USA each year. More brands start focusing on the production of different goods for yoga – yoga clothes, mats, and accessories. There are even yoga restaurants offering vegan and vegetarian meals cooked according to the principles of Ayurveda.

Little wonder that there is even a brand of teas made specifically for yogis. Yogi Tea is a brand producing teas with different flavors and different functions. Of course, the name of the brand does not mean that these teas are meant to be drank only by yogis and yoginis. It just means that these teas are designed with a special attention to your well being, like everything connected with yoga.

The brand was founded thanks to Yogi Bhajan, a teacher of holistic living who started teaching in the US in 1969. Apart from teaching yoga, he told his students about medicinal qualities of different herbs. During his teaching sessions, he served his students the so-called Yogi Tea, which was basically the well-known Ayurveda chai with five traditional spices: cardamom, cinnamon, clove, ginger, and black pepper.

Yogi Bhajan’s student were so inspired by the simple magic of Yogi Tea that they decided to bring it closer to people by creating a tea-producing company. Today, the brand offers over 60 tea blends created with different herbs and spices.

The motto of the brand is “Feel Good, Be Good, Do Good”. That is what the representatives of the brand do and what they are trying to encourage others to do. Isn’t that a noble mission – to make the world a little better by starting with yourself?

All Yogi teas are sorted based on two principles – by function and by flavor. By function, there are black teas, detox & wellness teas, green teas, woman’s teas, chai teas, digestive support teas, herbal teas, cold weather season teas, energy teas, and rest & relax teas. The flavors available offer a great variety yet they can be sorted into several categories – berry, citrus, herbal, rooibos tea, black tea, fruity, licorice, spice, chai, green tea, and mint.

Salada Green Tea

Salada is a brand specializing in the production of tea only. Their products include green tea, matcha green tea, herbal tea, white tea, black tea, decaf tea, single serve cups, fresh brew iced teas, and tea assortments.

The company was founded in 1892 by Peter C. Larkin. The first thing he did was bringing about an innovation that is widely used today. He was the first who started selling tea in foil packages to preserve the taste and smell of fresh tea. This caused a real revolution in the production of tea. Prior to that, all tea was sold by weight, not packaged.

Today, the company is located in New York and has over 80 employees in its crew. The brand gives special preference to green tea, stating that is the best option for those who want to get pleasure combined with health benefits.

Most tea leaves used by Salada come from Zhejiang province in Southern China. However, some of their tea leaves come from Argentina. All the products come from responsible sources so that customers can be sure of the quality of the tea they drink.

With this blend from Salada, you can enjoy a nice brew right before going to bed. Chamomile and mint will set your mind at ease and help you leave all the worries of the day behind. You will sleep as soundly as a child and will wake up well-rested in the morning.

Green Tea Buying Guide and Tips

The History of Green Tea

People all over the world enjoy green tea today. Yet very few know its origins and history. Let’s find out how green tea has come to be the favorite drink of so many people.

Probably, everybody knows that green tea has come from China. However, not everyone knows how ancient this drink is. The first record telling about green tea dates back 2737 BC. In China, it was the reign of Emperor Shen Nong. It is thanks to him that we can enjoy this wonderful drink today.

There is a half-legendary written story about how green tea has been discovered. Emperor Shen Nong, who is quite a noticeable character in Chinese medicine and agriculture, brew the first cup of green tea in history quite accidentally. He was boiling water in the garden and a leaf from an overhanging wild tea tree, which is now known as Camellia sinensis fell right into his bowl.

The Emperor hadn’t noticed that at first. Yet, when he tried his “water”, he found it to be exceptionally refreshing. That is when he discovered a small leaf in the bowl and realized that is must be the reason of that new quality of hot water. After that, Shen Nong started researching the plant and discovered its multiple health benefits.

About the same time when green tea originated in China, people in Tibet and India also discovered it by their own. Indians even have their own legend telling about the mythical nature of green tea. The story tells about Prince Bodhi-Dharma, the founder of Zen – a branch of Buddhism. According to this legend, Bodhi-Dharma was so upset when he woke up after his meditation and realized that he had fallen asleep, he cut off his eyelids never to fall asleep again. Tea tree plants sprung from the ground where his eyelids fell.

However, those two versions are rather legends than true stories. Let’s now turn to dry facts.

Green tea became widespread during the reign of the Chinese Tang dynasty – 618-907. Their reign is even called “the classic age of tea”. It is during this time that tea became China’s national drink. During this time the first document regarding green tea was written. It is the Ch’a Ching, or Classi of Tea treatise composed by LuYu, a Buddhist monk. These years are also marked by the exporting of green tea. Japan became one of the first countries that had the opportunity to enjoy this wonderful brew.

The Western world came to know green tea much later, not until the 17th century when Portuguese sailors started roaming the seas between China and Portugal and binging different goods to Europe. Dutch were the next to bring tea to their homeland. Around the same time, green tea became known in Russia – it was transported along the famous Silk Road. Eventually, this drink became fashionable in all the European capitals. However, it was so pricey that only aristocracy and rich citizens could afford it.

The British are viewed as the most loyal tea-lovers in the world. However, that has not always been so. In fact, when tea first came to Great Britain, the majority of those who tried it detested it. They gave preference to coffee that had been in use for quite some time by then. Even aristocracy didn’t get used to drinking tea until Charles II married Catherine of Braganza, a Portuguese royal. She was the one who brought the tradition to drink tea to court. After that, the British East India Company monopolized tea trade with China.

Around the middle of the 17th century, green tea came to America, to New Amsterdam, which later became New York. This opened the age of tea consumption in American, which still lasts.

Today, the choice of green tea is as vast as never. Americans who were among the first to try green tea probably never imagined that such a variety could be possible. There are all flavors imaginable. You can choose leaf tea or green tea in bags. Besides, there is matcha green tea in powder. Brands offering green tea are also multiple. With such a wide choice, everyone can find tea to their taste.

Types of Green Tea

The varieties of this wonderful drink are so multiple that you’ll definitely find your favorite type. Or, perhaps, you’ll create a list of preferences depending on your needs and mood on any given day.

So, let’s delve deeper into the numerous varieties of green tea.

SenchaFukamushi SenchaGyokuroKabusechaTenchaMatchaGenmaichaHojichaShincha

This type is the most popular and can be found in easy access in almost any supermarket. This is the crudest type with the most basic technologies used in its production. To make Sencha, tea leaves are simply steamed and rolled.

This variety is a lot like Sencha, yet it is steamed about twice as long. As a result, the leaves become more powdery. The taste of the tea is also affected – it becomes somewhat stronger. Fukamushi Sencha has a slightly darker tint than traditional Sencha.

This type of tea is characterized by a special growing technology. To get Gyokuro, tea bushes are covered with a cloth about 20 days before it is time to harvest. This way, the amount of sunlight reaching the plant is limited. As a result, the amount of cathechins is somewhat lower. The flavor of Gyokuro is rich and has low astringency. However, the most unique characteristic of this type of green tea is its aroma. It is somewhat similar to nori seaweed.

It is grown similarly to Gyokuro, yet the cloth is placed on the bushes somewhat later – approximately one week before picking. The limiting of sunlight gives tea leaves a darker color. At the same time, Kabusecha has a rich flavor with low astringency.

This type of tea is grown just like Gyokuro. Yet, its preparation technology is somewhat different. Unlike other types of tea, leaves used for the production of Tencha are dried without being rolled after steaming. Tencha tea is produced mostly as an ingredient for Matcha.

This type of tea is basically stoneground Tencha. This tea is used in traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Unlike with other types of tea, when you drink Matcha, you consume tea leaves completely.

This is quite a unique type of tea. Its name is translated from Japanese as “brown rice”. This “tea” is, indeed, brown rice mixed with Sencha in equal proportions. Such a mixture is characterized by a lower caffeine content, which makes Genmaicha perfect for people who should not consume too much caffeine.

This type of tea is made by roasting other types (most often, Sencha). This results in an outstanding roasted aroma. Thanks to the roasting at 200 degrees C, tea becomes less bitter as caffeine becomes sublimated throughout this process. Hojicha has a light and clear taste. Even children like drinking it.

This tea is made of the first harvest of the season. These tea leaves are the richest in all the components that are so good for our health. Because the leaves are so young, Sincha tea has an exceptionally refreshing scent. Its taste is not too astringent because of the low content of caffeine and catechins. At the same time, this type of tea has a high content of theanine, which results in unique sweetness and a full flavor.

Green Tea Side Effects

Just like everything in this world, green tea has its side effects. Of course, its benefits are multiple and make this drink worth trying. Green tea can definitely help you become a healthier person. However, let’s also take a look at its possible side effects, to be on the safe side.

It can upset your stomach. Tannins in green tea is known for its ability to increase the amount of digestive acid. Consequently, green tea can cause stomachache, heartburn and nausea, especially if you drink it on an empty stomach. Dinking it between meals is the best solution. Another great way to decrease stomach acidity when drinking green tea is to add some milk to your drink. However, if you have gastritis, you’d better avoid green tea altogether.

It can cause iron deficiency. Consuming too much green tea can reduce iron absorption from the food you eat. It happens because of the polyphenols. They have the ability to bind to the iron and make it more difficult for your body to ingest. The most common result is anemia. If you want to avoid this side effect, just squeeze some lemon juice into your cup of tea. It is a well-known fact that Vitamin С helps us absorb iron. So, adding some lemon into your green tea can counteract this negative effect.

It can affect your nervous system. However, only if you drink too much. Because of caffeine, green tea can cause headaches of different intensity, dizziness, anxiety, and disturb your sleep. It can also make your heartbeat irregular. Drinking it before going to bed is not the best idea. Caffeine is known to increase adrenaline production, which is not the best thing when you want to have some rest.

If you suffer from headaches, it is best to eliminate green tea from your menu. If you want to sleep soundly at night, you’d better lose the habit of drinking green tea before going to bed.

It can cause diarrhea. All because of caffeine. Loose stool usually happens when you start drinking green tea on a daily basis. As your body gets used to it, your stool will get back to normal. Again, this side effect is more likely to happen if you drink green tea on an empty stomach. Drinking it between meals lowers the risk considerably.

It can be bad for your liver. Recent studies have shown that people who took green tea supplements to lose weight had frequent occurrences of acute liver failure. This is because high doses of catechins can result in high liver toxicity. Some polyphenols, including EGCG, can lead to different liver issues if taken in large amounts. Bottom line is green tea extracts and supplements are bad, as they contain these active components in high dosages. Natural green tea a couple of times a day will do your liver no harm, though.

It is unsafe for people who take prescription medicines. If you are healthy, you can drink green tea without worries. However, if you take any prescribed medicines, you should consult your doctor before adding green tea to your diet. Green tea interferes with certain hormones, stimulants, antibiotics, blood thinners, and some asthma drugs. It is also dangerous to drink green tea if you are taking any pills that have negative side effects on your liver.

Green Tea Nutrition Facts

If you are conscious about your health, then you are probably following a healthy diet. An there is no wonder if you want to know the nutritive value of everything that gets into your mouth, be it food or rinks. Let’s find out what nutrients green tea contains and can offer to us.

Green tea contains a lot of active components that can affect your health.  Catechins and flavan-3-ols are among them. Flavan-3-ols are known for their anti-aging qualities. Catechins provide a potent antioxidant effect.

Another interesting components found in green tea is EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate). Thanks to EGCG, green tea is known for its ability to enhance metabolism. It helps increase thermogenesis and, as a positive side effect, make you lose some weight.

Other active compounds found in green tea include:

  • Linoleic acid – a well-known fat burner. Apart from helping you become slimmer, it can also help you fortify your immune system.
  • Quercetin – a great anti-inflammatory that helps fight pain and allergies.
  • Caffeine that can boost your brain activity. The amount of caffeine varies depending on how long it has been steeped. On the average, the amount of caffeine in a cup of green tea is twice lower than in a cup of black tea and four times lower than in the cup of coffee.

Now, let’s look at the nutritional breakdown of a cup (8 fl oz) of green tea:

  • Potassium – 27 mg

Comparison with Other Drinks

Green tea is just one of the drinks we consume on a daily basis. It is preferred only by some people. Some people cannot imagine their life without black tea. Others are coffee addicts. There are also people who prefer such exotic beverages as oolong and white tea.

What is the difference between green tea and all these drinks? Let’s try to find out.

Green Tea vs Black Tea

The cause of all the differences between these two sorts of tea lies in the technology of their preparation. Green tea is not fermented unlike black tea, hence its light green color.

Without being fermented, tea leaves do not go through the process of oxidation. As a result, green tea is much richer in antioxidants. The famous EGCG gets destroyed during the process of fermentation, so none of it can be found in black tea. The number of polyphenols also stay at a high level.

Green tea contains much less caffeine compared to black tea. The latter has about twice as much of this nervous system stimulant.

Black tea is much more acidic than green tea, which makes it less healthy. When it comes to the taste, green tea has a lighter flavor, while black tea has a much deeper taste.

Green Tea vs Coffee

Green tea and coffee are completely different drinks. No wonder. If all teas (except for rooibos) are made from the same plant with the difference in the technology only, coffee comes from a completely different source. However, a lot of people cannot choose between these two beverages. Let’s take a look at their qualities to find what they are similar and different in.

Both green tea and coffee are caffeinated drinks. However, the amount of caffeine in these two brews differs a lot. When caffeine is concerned, one cup of coffee equals four cups of green tea. Such an amount of it makes coffee a much stronger stimulant. It also makes this drink more dangerous when it comes to cardiovascular health.

Both green tea and coffee affect your metabolism. We all know that coffee is a common part of many diets. Green tea has a somewhat milder effect, yet is turns out to be healthier and less stressful for your body in the long run.

If you cannot imagine your life without coffee, perhaps, you should try green coffee? It contains less caffeine and is less dangerous for your nervous system.

White Tea vs Green Tea

White tea contains the smallest amount of caffeine among all teas. It is made from the youngest tea leaves. White tea is the least processed compared to all the other types. It is steamed for a small amount of time and then dried. The leaves are not rolled or crushed. The preparation process does not involve fermentation, either.

The taste of white tea is even lighter than green tea flavor. In fact, when you first try white tea, you might feel as if you are drinking just hot water without any additives. However, as you go on drinking, you’ll feel some sweetness at the root of your tongue and down your throat.

Thanks to such a delicate technology, white tea can boast even more antioxidants than green tea. All that makes white tea even better when it comes to health and weight loss. It is great for your cardiovascular health and much more efficient at lowering the risk of cancer.

Oolong Tea vs Green Tea

Oolong tea is somewhere in-between black and green teas. It is semi-oxidized: its oxidation levels are higher compared to green tea and lower compared to black tea. Oolong is a great choice for those who cannot choose between those two types.

The method of preparation places the qualities of oolong somewhere in the middle between black and green tea. If you have to choose between green tea and oolong, it is best to choose green tea. If you have to choose between oolong and black tea, better choose oolong.

Green tea contains more antioxidants and polyphenols, and less caffeine. Meaning, green tea is a healthier choice compared to oolong. Yet, oolong is famous for its unique flavor – not too light, not too deep, just the golden medium.

How to Make Green Tea

Depending on how you do it, making a cup of green tea can become either a routine or a special ritual. If you do it with some care, making yourself a brew can become a real art. No wonder, Japanese make a full-blown ceremony out of this. So, how to brew green tea to get the most out of its flavor and health benefits?

If you really want to experience the delicate taste of genuine green tea, choose loose leaves tea, not bags. Tea that is not packed in bags is usually high-quality tea without any additives or debris. Besides, mots tea bags contain plastic. Now, that is not something you want to have in a cup with a hot brew. Drinking plastic is not the best idea for those who care about their health.

Here’s the best way to make green tea. You’ll need a kettle, a teapot, water, and tea.

  • Take the water to the boil and let it rest for a few minutes. Boiling water is too hot to make green tea. The perfect temperature is somewhere between 160°F and 170°F. If you leave the water for a few minutes after boiling, its temperature will naturally drop to a perfect level.
  • Place tea leaves into the teapot
  • Pour hot water into the teapot and leave your tea to steep for two to three minutes
  • Now you can pour the tea into cups and add a sweetener or any other additives, such as milk or lemon juice
  • Enjoy your tea!

Does green tea stain teeth?

Yes. Green tea, just like all the other teas, stains your teeth. This may sound shocking to you but green tea stains your teeth worse than coffee. How is that possible, you might ask? After all, green tea has a much lighter tint than coffee.Yet, that is true. Teeth staining happens because of chromogens and tannins. Chromogens actually do the staining, yet they are unlikely to do any harm without tannins. Tannins help chromogens stick to the enamel. That is why green tea is more likely to cause teeth staining – because of its high tannin content. Coffe contains much more chromogens, yet its tannin levels are nonthreatening.

Two or three cups of green tea a day won’t do your teeth any noticeable harm, though. Also remember that caffeine can corrode tooth enamel. So you should be careful with any caffeinated drinks.

Besides, there are some tips that will allow you to drink green tea and avoid teeth stains:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water after drinking green tea
  • Regular flossing can help you avoid teeth staining
  • Proper dental care is of the utmost importance. Brushing your teeth twice a day can help you avoid a lot of dental problems, not just enamel stains
How to smoke green tea?
Yes, there is quite an amount of people seeking the answer to that question. Smoking green tea may sound rather exotic to you. There are even green tea cigarettes available for those who want to try them. In fact, green tea is a much healthier alternative to tobacco. It contains no nicotine, meaning, it is not as harmful for your health. Yet, inhaling smoke is still bad, even if it comes from green tea. So better think twice before doing something like that.
